Self-contempt

Hitler also exhibited self-contempt, extolling all the qualities that he lacked. He talked of the nobility of being a superior breed due to the process of natural selection. But he himself was from lowly stock, the son of an illegitimate peasant and a servant girl. Several members of the family were mentally retarded.

He had none of the attributes his experts ascribed to the Nordic race and could never have qualified to become one of his own elite guard.

‘Strong and handsome must my young men be,’ he said. ‘I will have them fully trained in all physical exercises. I intend to have an athletic youth – that is the first and chief thing.’

Hitler himself never had the slightest aptitude for or interest in athletics.

He preached the sanctity of the family and the necessity of breeding more Germans, yet he was unmarried and had no children. He also preached ‘my new order’ and demanded punctilious discipline from his subordinates, though he was disorderly and self-willed.

According to Rauschning, he came close to admitting his inadequacies: ‘We older ones are used up. Yes, we are old already. We are rotten to the marrow … we are cowardly and sentimental. We are bearing the burden of a humiliating past, and have in our blood the dull recognition of serfdom and servility.’

On another occasion, he said: ‘All of us are suffering from the ailment of mixed, corrupted blood. How can we purify ourselves and make atonement?’
